That Night Follows Day
A Play For Adults, Performed By Children
Produced by Bare Cheek Theatre Company and County Wexford Youth Theatre in co-production with Wexford Arts Centre
Written by Tim Etchells
Directed by Tony McCleane-Fay
That Night Follows Day, catalogues the many ways a child's life is determined by that of their carers. With great clarity and humour it examines the systems of parenthood, upbringing, discipline, care and welfare that define children's and adolescent's worlds. Astonishingly simple and beautifully poetic, the play is performed by a cast of 16 children, ranging in age from 8 to 14, and all from Wexford in a ground-breaking play that speaks to the ways that adults project onto children, and to the ways that adults and children alike are both constrained and made by language as they try to describe their experiences and imagine their own futures.
"You teach us the past tense, the present tense and the future tense.
You teach us the perfect and the imperfect forms.
You teach us slang.
You teach us the kinds of things that can be done with words.
You tell us not to be so stubborn.
You teach us the difference between nouns, adjectives and verbs.
You tell us to keep our dirty little hands clean and our big fucking mouths shut."

That Night Follows Day examines the systems of parenthood, upbringing, discipline, care and welfare that define the worlds of children and adolescents. A play with children written for adults, That Night Follows Day playfully yet poignantly highlights how adults project their worlds onto the lives of the children around them.
Following on from their site-specific play about school-shootings Good Kids Drink Milk presented at last years Opera Festival, this original production promises to be one of the most talked-about plays in the Wexford theatre scene.
